What is Connecting 2.0 Communities?
NEXT EVENT: WED 17TH NOVEMBER
Connecting 2.0 Communities is a drop in for the voluntary and community sector that encourages those communities to engage with Manchester’s Digital Communities.
MDDA ran the first of these events at Madlab in February 2010 and over 30 people from the voluntary sector dropped in to have one-to-one conversations with Lets Go Global, Social Media Cafe, Madlab, Fly the Coop, GMCVO and others. Topics covered included social media, web and database development, creating video content, blogging and fundraising.
The wider community sector could often benefit from some of the free and simple online tools now available but may not have the time, confidence or expertise to find out about these things for themselves. This “drop in” offers a pressure-free environment where a whole range of digital experts are on hand to give advice on particular problems or signpost to where they can get more help.
I’m Digital - How can I get involved?
If you’ve any kind of digital or technology skills, or represent a user group, or other digital community and have an interest in helping the community sector we’d love you to be one of the “experts” at our drop in.
All we ask is that you are able to give an afternoon of your time for free, and that whether you’re a digital jack-of-all-trades or specialise in a particular area, you’re able to communicate in a non-technical way with people who may not have much digital knowledge.
Its a great opportunity to understand better the needs and frustrations of the voluntary and community sector – including the arts – and also to meet other digital experts. Although we don’t want people to come along to “sell” their company we’re more than happy for your to let people know what you do, and, if you’re representing a particular group, to invite our attendees along to your next meeting.
I’m not Digital – can I attend?
We’d love you to! And even if you are a bit digital you might well have particular questions that a one-to-one would help with.
Its mainly aimed at community and voluntary groups, and the arts sector as well are very welcome – and it’s also promoted primarily in the city of Manchester – however if your an individual with an interest, or from further afield, but with some interests in Manchester we’d still be happy to see you.
Register online here.
Its a drop in – so no need to register – but if you do it will help us with our planning – and we’ll also be able to send you some up-to-date information about what experts we’ve got on hand.
When is it?
The next Connecting 2.0 Communities event is on Wednesday 22nd September at Madlab. The Drop in will run from 2.00-6.30 and from 4.30-5.30 we will have a series of short 15 minute presentations.
If you’d like to volunteer to be one of our experts – either this time or in the future – then contact Adrian Slatcher (a.slatcher@manchesterdda.com) 0161 241 8207. If you can only make part of the afternoon, that’s fine as well – and if you would like to give a presentation about your group, or on a topic that you think the audience might find interesting, then we’ll fill these slots on a first come first served basis.
Who are MDDA again?
MDDA (Manchester Digital Development Agency) is part of Manchester City Council and we are now sponsoring the Social Media Cafe Manchester Ning, in order to help promote the Connecting 2.0 Communities event. We will be working in partnership with Social Media Cafe Manchester to encourage digital experts to come along to our event, and to encourage the community sector to attend Social Media Cafe and other related events in the city.
